With winter now upon us I think it’s time we don our country brogues, don’t you? The extra layer of leather on the sole and storm welts make these shoes perfect for this cold wet weather. At Bradshaw and Lloyd we stock a range of country brogues from various brands including Loake, Barker and Sanders. In this blog I will discuss my personal favourite from all three and perhaps, like me, you will find a new love for these sturdy, fashionable, shoes.
The first of my personal favourite heavy country brogues would be the Loake Badminton. This shoe is beautifully constructed on Loake’s 026 last which offers a broad G fitting and a rounded toe of standard length. Coming in two variations, mahogany grain and dark brown grain these shoes offer a rugged and stylish look. Like most country brogues the extra layer of leather on the sole and storm welt provides the wearer with added protection against the elements.
My second entry is the Barker Kelmarsh. Replacing the much loved Grassington, the Kelmarsh is similar in many ways. Made using the same premium leather that offers a bit more depth compared to the Loake Badminton. However, the Kelmarsh is now a G fitting and made on the 460G last rather than the Grassington’s F fitting 29 last. Again coming in two colours, cherry grain and cedar grain, these shoes are an exquisite example of a perfect country brogue.
Finally, the Sanders Salisbury is the last of my preferred country brogues. Built to last a lifetime the Salisbury differs itself from my previous choices as it offers a commando rubber sole which will surely last the lifetime of the shoe. The commando sole also adds an extra look of ruggedness which so many desire. Made on the M265 last which provides an F fitting and rounded toe of standard length. The Salisbury has three colour variants; chocolate waxy, black waxy and brown waxy leather.
